Bridget Poulter

Bridget Poulter Dance Practitioner/ Registered Dance Movement Psychotherapist

I am a Registered Dance Movement Psychotherapist, and qualified Keep Fit Association teacher. I work as a creative arts/play therapist and dance practitioner, offering classes and workshops in both traditional Egyptian dance and Laban-based creative movement. I also hold regular therapeutic dance sessions at a residential home for people living with dementia and other degenerative neurological conditions including stroke.

I have taught traditional-style Egyptian bellydance for 16 years, and currently have classes in Letchworth and Stevenage (Leisure Centre). I trained mainly in the UK but have travelled to Egypt to learn from professional musicians and dancers. I love sharing this exuberant and expressive art form with women of all ages and abilities. My student groups, Banat Al Gharb and Hawanim, perform regularly at private and community events. I also danced with the Tabeeya Dance Company for some years, appearing at Hitchin's Rhythms of the World Festival on many occasions, and at the Norwich Lord Mayor's Celebrations. Other appearances include workshops at The Big Dance Goes East in St Albans, and at the Fuze Music Festival alongside the Baladi Blues Ensemble.

I am part of The Nile School Shakers alongside drummer and percussionist, Tim Garside, providing Egyptian dance and percussion workshops to schools, enriching Ancient Egypt curriculum studies.

My decision to become a Dance Movement Psychotherapist was Inspired by teaching dance to women of many ages and abilities and encountering the emotional and psychological issues they brought to class which were released by the body through dance. After taking a counselling qualification, I studied for an MA at Goldsmiths College, University of London. I have a particular interest in supporting people to manage the emotional consequences of living with chronic long-term conditions such as MS. I have experience with various groups including the MS Therapy Centre in Letchworth, an AMH rehab unit, and a community mental health charity. My present work includes providing play/creative therapy within school settings and at a dedicated centre, supporting children suffering emotional and behavioural disturbance arising from family, developmental and associated problems.

Alongside my ADMP UK registration (private practitioner), I am a member of People Dancing (formerly The Foundation for Community Dance), the Laban Guild, and a qualified Keep Fit Association teacher.

I have a new Community Interest Company, Moving Through Life CIC, with a fellow DMP set up to offer therapeutic embodied movement practice to a wider audience.
