Craftbombing in St Albans: Voluntary Arts Week 2014

Craftbombing in St Albans: Voluntary Arts Week 2014

After reading about Voluntary Arts Week and how people celebrate all over the UK, I felt inspired to bring something to St Albans in the form of CraftBombs! So the past 3 months I’ve been planning two Craftbombs, one of which you will find in the town centre which involved working in partnership with local artists and crafters to display our own work, and the other at Trestle Arts Base which everyone could help in creating.

Early morning on Friday 9th May, myself and other members of the group took to the tree near the Clock Tower to set up the St Albans CraftBomb, using all of our creations that we had been busy working on over the weeks. This included bunting, knitting, crochet, embroidery and sculpture, which we used to wrap, tie and hang from the tree to create a colourful display! The aim of the Craftbomb was to promote work created by local artists and crafters, and to encourage creative partnership. As well as engaging the general public and providing a talking point, this has also been a brilliant opportunity for us Craftbombers to meet fellow creative people and we are now working towards future projects together! The work will be on display until Sunday 18th May.

Yesterday was another lovely day of CraftBombing, this time at Trestle Arts Base. Using ribbons, wool and pompoms our beautiful old trees got decorated by Storytent mums and little ones, girls from The Dance Studio ballet classes and members of the public. We were lucky to have the sun shining as we spent the day getting creative and learning how to make crafted birds nests and woollen flowers to add in!

All in all, it's been great fun and hopefully we have inspired people to get making and to share their work with other people. A big thank you to everyone who has taken part in and helped with both CraftBomb events this year, here's to making it bigger next time!
