Head of Music, Townsend CofE School, St Albans

Head of Music, Townsend CofE School, St Albans

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an excellent secondary music teacher to teach at a St Albans school and be part of an innovative school /music service partnership. The position is a full time appointment.

There is currently the equivalent of three days of curriculum delivery that you will lead on in a newly refurbished music department. Townsend Church of England School is an inclusive and small secondary school that is expected to grow from 3 forms of entry to at least 5 forms over the next few years. The school has recently been judged as ‘Good‘ by Ofsted and the school is keen to build a thriving and successful music department that meets the needs of all its students. Currently music is taught at Key Stage 3 to all students and is a GCSE option subject. Building the subject to offer A level teaching would be highly desirable.

We are looking for someone to lead music education at Townsend, delivering high quality and engaging lessons and offering a comprehensive range of extra-curricular provision and someone who will work within the Hertfordshire Music Service. The job would also involve building partnerships and other links with primary schools and St Albans Cathedral. The school holds four Cathedral services a year and the successful candidate would be expected to play a lead role in these by liaising, organising and preparing the musical content.

The Townsend teaching part of this job is an exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about bringing music into the lives of young people. The candidate would play an active role as a member of the teaching staff at Townsend. The remaining time each week will be spent as a secondary schools’ consultant within the Hertfordshire Music Service Curriculum Team, delivering Hub Partnership meetings and supporting schools and disseminating good practice. Initially much of this time will be spent re-invigorating your own music department at Townsend and this will then form the evidence base for your work with other schools. This aspect of the post demands excellent communication skills and a passion for sharing best practice.
