Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading support and research charity for people with dementia, their families and carers. There will be 850,000 people with dementia in the UK by 2015 with numbers set to rise to over 1 million by 2025.

The Society has three administrative bases in Hertfordshire located in Bishops Stortford, Welwyn Garden City and at Leavesden, near Watford.

We are now looking to recruit singing Leaders to join our popular and successful Singing for the Brain service. Singing for the Brain (SftB) is an Alzheimer’s Society activity that enables people with dementia and their carers to engage in the benefits of structured community singing. It involves singing and gentle exercise, with an emphasis on enjoyment, participation and equality.

Of course our Singing Leaders must love singing, but we also need Leaders who will be confident and capable of leading SftB sessions. You will be responsible for running an hour and a half long session at three agreed locations a week, so you will need to have a good repertoire of age appropriate songs to draw upon as well as having an appreciation of the older voice and how to care for it.

You will be a great communicator too with an understanding of dementia and its impact on those living with it and also the impact this has on their carer’s. You will be sensitive to individual needs and work to design sessions that reflect this.

Despite your well-honed creative talents, you will also be someone who is capable of organising and managing your own administration which will include maintaining timely computerised record keeping to the highest of standards.

We won’t expect you to run the SftB sessions alone though as we have a good team of volunteers who will provide you with various practical help. In turn you will need to provide them with ongoing support and help to induct new starters into the groups.

We recognise the need to continually develop the service to maintain its high quality and you will have access to plenty of support, both through your regular team and one to one meetings but also through access to training.

Our SftB sessions currently run in Wheathampstead, Bishops Stortford, Hemel Hempstead, Bushey, Letchworth, Potters Bar, Hoddesdon, Stevenage, Welwyn Garden City, Watford and St Albans. You will be responsible for three of these sessions so will also need to be able to travel independently between your services. A visit to a SftB sessions will be available for interested applicants.

So what are you waiting for? This could be your dream job! Why don’t you apply NOW to become a part of this successful service? To arrange a visit, or for further information, please use the telephone number below.
