The Jazz Workshop has two main aims, which are primarily educational:
· to introduce new musicians to playing jazz, so that more people play jazz;
· to provide opportunities for existing jazz musicians to play together to improve their ensemble playing.

The Jazz Workshop does this by providing an opportunity for musicians new to playing jazz to try it out in an informal, friendly atmosphere, with no ‘school room’ feel. The Jazz Workshop operates as a ‘first step’ in education for new jazz musicians, from where, if they want to, they may progress to more formal workshops, rehearsal bands, etc.

The Jazz Workshop also provides an easily accessible opportunity for more experienced players to get together to try out new ideas, and practice their ensemble playing. The Jazz Workshop has no membership fees, and asks only for voluntary contributions to its weekly running costs in order to actively encourage disadvantaged and older people (e.g. retired or unwaged) to attend.
