Old Man In Military Costume

Old Man In Military Costume

Oil on Canvas
48 inches x 36 inches:
after a painting by Rembrandt.
Rembrandt was for me a true expressionist. The emotion captured with paint and light, especially in his later self portraits is breathtaking.

The medium used in this painting was walnut oil, which I used very sparingly. In the Maestro's painting you can really sense the anxiousness of the old soldier and these real emotions I love to capture in my own way.

I find walnut oil to have an almost silky feel compared to linseed oil and a little less 'oily'. In fact this painting was the one where I finally made the switch after trying both oils for a while.
