Letchworth Sinfonia Conductor Vacancy

Letchworth Sinfonia has a vacancy from September 2017 for a permanent conductor / musical director. We rehearse in Hertfordshire’s first Garden City on alternate Sundays from September to June, afternoons in the summer months, evening in the winter months.

We are a largely amateur, friendly group with a professional leader that strives for high performance standards. As a chamber orchestra we comprise strings, double woodwind and French horns in our regular membership. We have access to other brass and percussion, but limited budget for extras at concerts, so usually only add trumpets and timpani. We focus on repertoire that is accessible to our players and our audience and that fits within budgetary constraints.

We perform two concerts a year (usually January and June), at least one of which will contain a concerto. Recent soloists have included Veronica Henderson, Callum Smart, Madelina Rusu, Fenella Humphries, Thomas Gould, Alison Eales and Emma Halnan.

The conductor will be expected to do the following:
• rehearse the orchestra over approximately 25 rehearsals, on alternate Sundays (2.30pm – 5.30pm in summer, 7pm to 9.30pm in winter), and conduct concerts
• recommend repertoire and agree concert programmes with the committee
• draft programme notes for concerts
• source potential soloists when appropriate
• attend committee meetings when needed (before or after rehearsals)
Fees and expenses will be subject to discussion with the Treasurer.

Applications must be received not later than 14th May 2017 and should include:
• a cover letter outlining why you want, and would be good for the role, and two sample suggested concert programmes
• a brief Curriculum Vitae

In the first instance a selection of candidates will be interviewed by phone, and then shortlisted candidates will be asked to come and rehearse with the orchestra on Sunday 18th June. References will be requested and taken up for short-listed candidates.
