Beowulf

Beowulf

Seth Kriebel’s Beowulf is an interactive performance-game that invites you to explore the world of this legendary story… without leaving your seat

Harking back to Beowulf’s roots in the oral storytelling tradition. The audience is transported to a frozen world of Vikings and monsters, in a new twist on a 1,000 year old epic.

Commissioned by Battersea Arts Centre and supported by the British Library, in this version of Beowulf, the audience are part of the story; offering instructions like ‘follow the path’ or ‘pick up the axe’ to move through the described, imagined places. Working together to overcome obstacles, fight foes and navigate the narrative of the original English story of man versus monster.
A millennium after the Viking hero’s adventures were first written down — the play asks why, after all these years, we still tell each other stories about the monsters that lurk in the dark.

Combining the simplicity of bare-bones storytelling and the excitement of contemporary
‘sandbox’ style video games to live performance, each re-telling of Beowulf is unique — bringing the world of the ancient epic to life with a new immediacy.
