Highly appetising musical lunch on offer

Some of the most gifted teenage musicians in the UK will be displaying their talents at a lunchtime recital in Rickmansworth on Wednesday, December 1.

Students from the Purcell School in Bushey, the country's oldest specialist music school, are to perform works by Maurice Ravel, Johannes Brahms and the 20th-century French composer Darius Milhaud. The school is a world-class centre of excellence that has produced three recent winners of the BBC Young Musician competition.

The one-hour concert will be the sixth in the popular series of concerts that the Purcell School has given for Three Rivers Music Society.

The concert will open with the first two movements of Ravel’s String Quartet in F Major, which was admired by Claude Debussy. The Purcell students will then play the first movement of Brahms’ Clarinet Quintet in B minor, which the great German Romantic composer wrote for the star clarinettist of the day, Richard Mühlfeld.

The programme’s final work, Milhaud’s jaunty Scaramouche, became an instant hit after it was premiered in Paris in 1937.

The concert will be held in the Baptist Church, High Street, Rickmansworth WD3 1EH and will begin at 1pm. Tickets £6 at the door. Reduced price for members. Free entry for under-25s.
