Bishops Stortford Sinfonia / Events / Sat 25 Jan 2020
Rachmaninoff and Dorothy Howell
In a special treat for a cold winter's evening, Bishop's Stortford Sinfonia performs one of the most Romantic Symphonies in the repertoire: Rachmaninoff's Second. Without doubt one of Rachmaninoff's crowning glories, his Second Symphony takes the listener on a thrilling roller coaster of emotions, featuring some of the most heart rending melodies he ever wrote. To proceed it, the Divertissements and Humoresque by English Twentieth Century composer Dorothy Howell are works that have seldom been heard in the concert hall. Howell achieved fame through her tone poem Lamia, a work that has been frequently performed in the Proms. However, the scores of her Divertissements and Humoresque have only been recently discovered, and this will be one of their first performances. The music is immediately approachable, full of vibrant colour and imagination.
