Going Out: Sharon Haward, Making Space at Fabrica

One of our New Year’s resolutions at Blue Monkey Network is to get out more! We want to see more art and more of what our members are getting up to. So for our February event we’re going to visit Blue Monkey’s Sharon Haward during her Making Space residency at Fabrica in Brighton. Sharon will present work in progress made during her short residency at Fabrica and the evening will provide an opportunity to talk about the challenges and opportunities for artists working site specifically and to find out more about Fabrica’s Making Space project.

Fabrica is a visual arts organisation based in a former Regency church in the heart of Brighton that commissions contemporary visual art installations specific to the building. Making Space is an opportunity for artists to use the unique space to make new work, lay out or document work or try something out for a small invited audience in Fabrica, outside of the main exhibition programme.

Sharon Haward is an artist who works with a range of media to create site specific installations and interventions with the aim of suggesting or implying something unexpected or uncanny in relation to the site, the building or some related narrative element. This quotation from Jane Rendell’s book Art and Architecture: A Place Between summarises the core ideas that sit at the centre of her practice: “The insertions of objects, texts, images and voices into a context already thick with meaning has produced a complex scene, which invites the viewer to move through the work, drawing out hidden and differing meanings over time . . .”
