Pure Colour: The Abstract Paintings of Patrick Jones

Pure Colour: The Abstract Paintings of Patrick Jones

gloss- Art Exeter is very pleased to present a solo exhibition of paintings by artist Patrick Jones, one of England’s foremost and respected abstract painters. The exhibition brings together a collection of works from the last three decades and includes Jones’s signature large-scale canvases as well as smaller works and prints.

Jones’s paintings are characterised by their colour, vibrancy and size and he creates an eloquent and expressive pictorial language through his work. He is a painter whose work is concerned with colour and structure through built form. His aim is to inspire the viewer through the act of looking - like Rothko whose work acts on the edge of the viewers perceptual range, Jones chooses his palette for maximum emotional resonance.

He is most well known for his striking and huge scale unprimed canvases with intense and highly charged fields of colour pigment. The architecture of Gloss Gallery provides a fantastic setting in which to appreciate the scale and significance of the work. ‘No Pasaran’ a colour field painting and ‘Duality’ one of Patrick’s ‘Tall Series’ of paintings will be part of the Exeter show. The exhibition will also include a special collection of Patrick’s small works on paper.

Patrick grew up in East Devon but his career as an artist has taken him from Devon to London and New York and back. He has exhibited at the Hayward and the Serpentine in London in major survey shows of British Abstract Painting and represented the UK in the Carnegie International. In the 1980s he was right at the epicentre of the contemporary abstract expressionist energy in New York. He became friends with Helen Frankenthaler an artist who played a major part in influencing his work. He stayed and taught and exhibited in America for 16 years, returning to the UK in 1994.

Patrick has exhibited at MOMA Oxford, had solo shows in London, Washington D.C. and Dublin, Ireland. His most recent shows include Uncaught Hares at the Stephen Lawrence Gallery, London and Fishwick & Friends at Falmouth Art Gallery. His work is widely collected in the UK and internationally, by artists like Sir Antony Caro, by individuals, The Lionel Phillips Collection and institutions such as Unilever and Triangle New York.

Co-manager at gloss Gallery, Polly Dolby says “We are delighted and very fortunate to be showing Patrick’s work. The show will include work from several decades and will be priced to be affordable to the new collector”.

“I think it is a wonderful story that a Devon artist who has lived in London and New York most of his life has returned to his roots and is exhibiting this important and exciting body of work”.

The Patrick Jones Solo Exhibition commences at gloss Art Exeter on Barnfield Crescent in the city centre on Saturday 22nd September and closes on Saturday 13th October.
