Growing for Life Growing for Life

"Growing for Life" is an organic gardening project on the edge of Torbay that works with volunteers from all walks of life. It is an Eden Project based initiative managed by Shekinah Mission.

Those that join the project work together to learn how to grow organic food, make compost, potting and sowing, how to manage wildlife areas, cooking in the clay oven and a wide range of other skills through varied and exciting activities. Physical exercise working outside and learning about growing healthy food can provide great health improvements and the social interaction that volunteers engage in helps to increase self-esteem and confidence as well as building trust, mutual respect and a sense of achievement.

It provides opportunities for a wide range of people to realise their potential and raise personal aspirations through growing food together. It is managed by the Shekinah Mission a charity based in Plymouth and Torbay, which is an agency seeking to support people who are homeless, have substance misuse issues, are ex-offenders or feel socially excluded in other ways. These and other volunteers work together in a safe, non-judgemental environment, giving them the chance to learn skills whilst meeting new people.

This project has wonderful facilities for growing people and food, and even though the project is still in its infancy, the gardens are amazingly productive, with excellent facilities such as polytunnels, the log-cabin and compost-loo, which have been built by the volunteers themselves. With the guidance of highly experienced growers the project provides a unique setting with opportunities for volunteering whilst learning a wide range of valuable new skills.
