The Works
David Hamling’s work is inspired by a life-long love of geology, with a focus on the weight, tension and the dynamics of form intrinsic to the landscapes of Dartmoor and the South Hams coast. The Works will include mixed media pieces of sand, bronze powder, carborundum paste, Liquitex and PVA adhesives, as well as painting, a range of drawing including life study, and some photography.
All work has a highly tactile element and often considers the notion of decay and entropy.
"I am looking to extend some of the more unusual processes applied in my 2014 exhibition with a greater emphasis on the idea of incongruity of space, and the implication of the mark. The techniques applied are no more than vehicles to this end. I have no interest in abstraction for its own sake, merely as it enables me to extend other facets of my thinking beyond that of the pictorially real. Equally I have no specific use for the ‘photoreal’ unless it performs an equally specific visual statement that I wish to consider. The designer Pierre Boulanger stated, “Consider all the possibilities, and then consider the impossible.”
My work looks to consider a number of possibilities. I have no wish to develop a ‘house style’."
During a career in art education, including 20 years teaching on degree courses, David undertook a number of one-man shows and exhibited nationally and internationally. Now retired, he has returned to his native South Devon.
