Wenceslas: A Christmas Celebration

Wenceslas: A Christmas Celebration

Wenceslas was composed for Manvinder Rattan by Bob Chilcott in 2014 to mark the 150th anniversary of the John Lewis Partnership. With new words by the poet Charles Bennett, the legend of the Bohemian King Wenceslas, who braved the winter weather with his page to save the life of a poor peasant on the feast of Stephen, is presented as a vivid snow-bound story.

The well-known carol Good King Wenceslas is interwoven throughout this delightful work whose contrasting movements are punctuated by an instrumental interlude and triumphant fanfare. Wenceslas culminates in the audience singing with the choir and orchestra in the last section of the piece. Whatever the weather outside, this contemporary reimagining of the much-loved carol will transport you straight to the heart of a Bohemian winter.

Audience participation is a long-standing HCS tradition at this time of year. We also invite you to join with us in singing other carols in celebration of the festive season.
