By the Pricking of Our Thumbs... An evening of witchcraft

Join three Hertfordshire writers for an evening of witchcraft and wonders on Thursday 7 November 2013, 8pm – 9.30pm, at The River Room, Hertford Theatre, Hertford SG14 1PS.

Three hundred years ago, Hertford was the scene for the notorious trial of Jane Wenham, the ‘Witch of Walkern’. What really happened and why? How long did belief in witches persist in Hertfordshire and beyond?
Prof. Owen Davies of the University of Hertfordshire, author of several books on witchcraft beliefs, will discuss the Wenham case and its place in the history of witch trials – in both the UK and the New World.
Kate Miller will present scenes from ‘The Last Witch’, her play about Jane Wenham, produced at Hertford Theatre.
Mary Rensten will talk about her new novel, ‘A Handful of Straw’, centred on the mysterious events at Walkern in February and March 1712.
The evening will be chaired by Dr Janet Woodall of the Walkern History Society.
Tickets £7/ £5 from Hertford Theatre box office tel 01992 531500 www.hertfordtheatre.com
