Hitchin Chamber Music Concert - Memories and Remembrance

Hitchin Chamber Music Concert - Memories and Remembrance

Hitchin Chamber Orchestra is proud to be embarking on its second season of concerts. Our first season was nothing if not ambitious and we are grateful to our enthusiastic audience for their support and encouragement.

Our first concert of the new season on 12 November will take place in the newly refurbished Town Hall, when HCO presents an entertaining programme of much loved string music, with more than a nod towards the theme of remembrance in this anniversary year of the bloodiest battles of the First World War.

Barber's 'Adagio,' featured in the sound track of many a film - Oliver Stone's war film Platoon being a striking example - has been described as 'full of pathos and cathartic passion.' The little known but sumptuous 'Requiem for Three Cellos' by Popper, written in memory of a friend, features soloists from our own accomplished cello section. The beautiful theme immortalised by violinist Itzhak Perlman in the film score for Schindler's List will add further to the reflective dimension of the evening's performance.

The remainder of the programme consists of music by British composers. Vaughan Williams' Charterhouse Suite and contemporary composer John Rutter's Suite for Strings represent what is often identified as the English post-romantic style, skilfully bringing to the fore the range of musical colour and emotion particular to a string orchestra. Purcell's famed Chacony, arranged by another Englishman, Benjamin Britten, provides a forthright overture.

We hope very much that you will be able to share this evening of beautiful music with us.
