Mary's story

Abbots Langley received national press coverage when the parochial church council proposed to tidy up the graveyard. This involved uprooting the gravestone of Mary Treble, or Maid Mary, the village ghost.

Mary Anne was the housekeeper at the vicarage of St Lawrence church in the early 1900’s. A sewing maid, employed at the vicarage by Canon Parnell and his formidable wife, Angus.

Surprisingly, Mary seems to have been a well-known and well-loved figure in Abbots Langley, remembered fondly for giving sweets to small children.

When Mary died suddenly in 1914, many rumors began around the circumstances of her death.

Some thought she had sadly committed suicide.

Some thought she had tragically fallen down the stairs at the Vicarage…

Some thought that the Canons wife, Angus, who had ruled her house with a rod of iron, had shaken Mary to her death…

There have been many apparent sightings of Mary between the Vicarage and the Churchyard, apparitions and ghostly footsteps.

Repeated, mysterious damage to the Vicarage fireplace after Mary’s death and sightings of Mary staring from the Vicarage window became local folklore…

All Souls’ Day is the time that Maid Mary manifests, reports and sightings around Halloween. In the 1960’s the Parish Priest reported witnessing a ghostly apparition of a lady who fitted the description of Mary whilst he conducted Mass on All Souls’ Day.

After her relatively recent exorcism, her ghost was never seen again – unless you know otherwise...
