Christmas At Oakwell

Christmas At Oakwell

Oakwell Hall and Country Park in Birstall is getting in the festive spirit with special seasonal events in the run-up to Christmas. And there is something for everyone to enjoy.
The fun starts with something for the ‘shoppers’ – a Christmas Craft Weekend on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 December, featuring stalls full of seasonal goodies, Christmas music and food. The craft stalls will be open for business from 11am to 4pm in the Barn in the Visitor Centre Courtyard, next to the car park at the top of Nova Lane. Santa will also be in residence in the Hall where, for a small charge, children will be able to visit him. Entry to the Hall will be free of charge this day.
Then, on Sunday, 16 December, there is a chance to enjoy ‘Christmas with the Batts’ in the Great Hall. The afternoon of seasonal Yule will feature the Leeds Waits and will include traditional songs, carols to sing and a mumming play, one of the oldest surviving features of the traditional English Christmas.
Booking, £10 per person, is essential for this event which is from 2pm to 4pm. Please note that the Hall will be closed to other visitors on this day.
There will be excitement aplenty for children on Friday, 21 December, when they can join Santa and his helpers around a campfire and make a wooden Christmas decoration. There are two opportunities to enjoy ‘Father Christmas in the Woods’, 4.30pm-5.30pm and 5.30pm-6.30pm. The cost is £8 per child and pre-booking is essential. Children must be aged five years and over and accompanied by an adult.
No Oakwell Christmas would be complete without the magnificent Great Hall being bedecked as it would have been when the Batt family lived there in the 17th Century. ‘Deck the Halls’, from Saturday, 22 December, until Sunday, 6 January, is an opportunity to see the Hall’s traditional decorations. The Hall will be open 12noon-4pm every day except Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Friday 28 December, Monday 31 December and Friday 4 January. Normal Hall admission charges apply.
Bookings for events can be made at the Visitor Centre shop or by telephoning 01924 324761 and choosing option 2.
Tickets to the Hall should be purchased at the Visitor Centre shop. Charges are:- adult £3.50, child £1.00, family £8.00 (two adults and up to four children). Kirklees Passport holders receive 50% discount on admission prices.
