Rae Kelly Biography
Rae is a Dublin-born singer/songwriter. Her charming blend of catchy pop, sultry jazz and thought-provoking lyrics endear her to audiences. Writing from the early age of 10, she performed mostly as part of a church choir group until reaching the final of the 2FM National Song Writing Contest at the age of 17, performing her original material publically for the first time to an audience in Vicar Street, Dublin. Despite kick-starting her career in one of the finest venues in Dublin and being offered slots in other reputable venues in the area (such as Crawdaddy, Whelans and Bewley’s Theatre Café), Rae suffered from a crippling stage fright that led her to perform quite sporadically. After completing a degree in Music Technology in 2009 she moved to St Albans to obtain an MSc in Music Composition for Film and Media from The University of Hertfordshire.
The move to St. Albans proved integral to Rae’s development as a performer. The wealth of musicians and supportive local ears in the area led her to cultivate the confidence to gig more frequently and subsequently venture out to play larger venues.
Since overcoming her anxieties Rae has played support to Rox and Lauren Pritchard, reached the final of St Albans’ ‘Music City Live and Unsigned’2012 culminating in a gig in the Alban Arena, appeared on BBC Introducing and in the summer of 2012 was invited to play at the ZMF Festival in Freiburg, Germany which featured performances from artists such as Janelle Monae and Patti Smith.
