En La Luna

Our Artist in Residence this month is Rosa Marrero. Rosa who comes from from Las Palmas in the Canary Islands, has brought some warmth and heat to Dot to Dot with her with magical drawings of fruit and trees. Rosa studied fine Art in Tenerife and has exhibited widely in the Canary Islands. She is showing two sets of recent work at Dot to Dot Gallery.

The first group of drawings are observational studies of fruit, made with coloured pencils, to which Rosa has later added an imaginary element; a figure, a balloon, a boat. Rosa says these additions were not predetermined but suggested by the drawings. What she adds to the drawings is “an element of the unexpected which contributes to a story – a story which in some way is not familiar to me, so may contain elements suggestive of possible stories.”

The second set of drawings are again observed, studies of tree branches made with graphite or monochrome pencils. Rosa has overlayed the drawings one upon another to create flat shapes, giving a sense of atmospheric perspective. Then, as in the first series of drawings, she has added a surrealistic element, “whatever my imagination conjured up for the images”
- for instance a pair of feet or a bird. The images then become stories in themselves that the viewer can imagine, perhaps the beginning of an adventure or an image from a lost fairytale.

The exhibition runs from 3 – 28 June. All works are for sale.
There will be related drawing activities for children in the gallery throughout the exhibition.
