Sheila’s artwork has taken a critical view of social, political and cultural issues combining themes from Sublime Art through Feminist Theory and into Maternal Subjectivity. She teaches printmaking in secondary schools, colleges and on the Artscool! project at University of Hertfordshire. Sheila makes complex mixed media artwork using a variety of materials and processes with printmaking as a central core.
During lockdown her work has taken a new turn as she has been engrossed in nature and appreciating its benign indifference to our human tragedy. She has taken to foraging in and around her beautiful rural studio in Marsworth and has found many rewarding things to make into home-made inks. Following nature’s lead she has also discovered Eco-printing; a satisfying way to explore plant pattern, colour, dyes and this natural technique.
Leaves, petals, heat and water - with these simple ingredients she has begun to make beautiful images that connect with the natural world around her. She makes unique eco-prints that reflect the land around her studio, as well as the choices of her hands and eyes. Along the way she has learned trust, acceptance and perseverance, learned the names of many local plants both cultivated and wild, and now pays much more attention to how they change through the seasons.
