Crawley Station arts project: To contribute to an arts project that will be mounted on the Southbound side of the station. Project covered by the Crawley News
School children celebrated the grand unveiling of an arts project to improve Crawley Railway Station on Friday.

Artworks have been installed in the station’s waiting areas and montages were unveiled on the platforms by the Mayor of Crawley, with MP Henry Smith, artists Juliette Goddard and Zeezee, and Veronica Payne and Sam Bryant from Sussex Community Rail Partnership were in attendance.

The project was initially started by Paul Schrade of the Crawley Community & Voluntary Service and is now being co-ordinated by former Crawley borough councillor Vanessa Cumper.

Artwork from West Green Primary School is already on display in the waiting room on Platform 1 and the series of montages reflecting Crawley community life have been completed for Platform 2.

Vanessa described how the work of school children and community groups had helped create some ‘fantastic’ pieces of art for the station,.

The crow theme aims to represent the origin of the word ‘Crawley’, and a bird has been drawn in a different place in each montage to create the illusion of flight to passing train passengers.

Many Crawley artists have offered their time and support to the project, while children from 1st Crawley Cubs, Southgate Primary, Langley Green Primary, and The Gatwick School have all contributed.

Several of the montages on Platform 2 are in place with several still to be installed.
