GIDEON KLEIN: PORTRAIT OF A COMPOSER

Jewish composer Gideon Klein continued to make music despite Nazi persecution. This is his story.
A young man’s determination to make music under Nazi occupation
Written and devised by David Fligg. Dramatisation by Brian Daniels. Featuring the Theseus Quartet (Royal Northern College of Music).

Based on eyewitness testimony and letters, ‘Gideon Klein: Portrait of a Composer’ tells the extraordinary story of an outstanding composer and pianist. Musicians and actors will recreate Gideon’s precocious childhood, the exciting artistic environment of pre-war Prague, and his remarkable musical activities during his imprisonment in the Theresienstadt ghetto. The performance will be followed by a Q&A with writer David Fligg and dramatist Brian Daniels, facilitated by Dr Lisa Peschel (University of York).

‘Gideon Klein: Portrait of a Composer’ has been performed in the USA, Czech Republic, Germany and the UK. We are delighted to bring it to Huddersfield in a partnership between the Holocaust Survivors’ Friendship Association, the Music, Humanities and Media department at the University of Huddersfield, and the Royal Northern College of Music.
