Sunday Sessions at The Gallery

The Poetry Village is delighted to welcome two wonderful poets to celebrate the launch of this new monthly event at The Gallery in Slaithwaite near Huddersfield.

The Sunday Sessions are a brand new monthly event co-hosted by The Poetry Village and The Gallery where poets and authors are invited to read and launch their work in the unique surroundings of Brittania Mills whilst enjoying coffee and cake from the gallery's very own coffee shop.

Maria Isakova Bennett

Maria, from Liverpool, works as a teacher, writer, and artist. She collaborates on projects in galleries on Merseyside, runs workshops for Mersey Care, and recently launched a stitched poetry journal, Coast to Coast to Coast, co-edited with Michael Brown. Maria has been previously awarded first prize in the Ver Open Poetry Award judged by Clare Pollard, and received a Northern Writers’ Award in June.

Maria will be launching her pamphlet, All the Spaces at this event.

Maria Isakova Bennett’s series of poems weaves its way through artistic and personal histories to explore both modernist sculpture and marital unrest. In response to the sculptural ‘poems’ of Salouda Raouda Choucair, structures made of clay and stone, Maria explores the use of white, blank space and gaps in her own exquisitely formed concrete poems, showing a fascination with physical, material artworks. Alongside this immediate imagery are poems that contemplate space and rigidity in personal relationships. Interlinked in this pamphlet, these poems illuminate each other, and form a revealing comment on the different ways we consider fragmentation and realignment.

Sarah L Dixon

Sarah is based in Linthwaite, Huddersfield and tours as The Quiet Compere. She has been published in Confluence, The Interpreter's House, The Lake, Obsessed with Pipework, Troubadour and Curlew. She's also had a poem published on a beer mat.
Her debut pamphlet, The Sky is Cracked, was published by Half Moon Books in November 2017.

Sarah's inspiration comes from many places including pubs and music, being by and in water and adventures with her seven year old son, Frank. She is still attempting to write better poetry than Frank did aged 4!

Frank's line aged 4 was 'Is your heart in a cage so it doesn't fly away?'
