Watford Filmhouse presents Wadjda.......a movie of firsts.
So our final monthly film will be WADJDA on Saturday 10 May.
WADJDA is a movie of firsts. This first feature film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia is the story of a young girl living in a suburb of Riyadh determined to raise enough money to buy a bike in a society that sees bicycles as dangerous to a girl's virtue. Even more impressive, WADJDA is the first feature film made by a female Saudi filmmaker. In a country where cinemas are banned and women cannot drive or vote, writer- director Haifaa Al Mansour has broken many barriers with her new film. (c)
‘When the rules don’t fit. Find the courage to follow your own’
‘A story that really needs to be told about women's lives in Saudi Arabia, in so many ways. Whilst the story itself is very good, the setting of her mother's life and struggles mirrors and strengthens this.’
'Wadjda' offers a fresh insight into Islam, and breaks many barriers in its making. For this reason alone, it is worth seeing.’
