Explore Chine-Collé – April

Explore Chine-Collé – April

Short day workshop
Friday 6th April 2018
10 – 2

£50.00

Join printmaker Danielle Creenaune for a short day workshop exploring the technique of chine collé – a way of adding colour and collage to your prints using thin papers. Chine-collé is a printmaking technique in which the image is transferred to a thinner paper surface that is bonded to a heavier support in the printing process. Chine-collé roughly translates from French, “chine” meaning tissue and “collé” meaning paste. It is generally thought that the term “Chine” was used because the thin tissue paper was traditionally imported from China, India or Japan.

This course will focus on the application of chine-collé in the intaglio process, however the techniques taught can equally be adapted for use in lithography and relief. Bring your own intaglio plates, (etchings or drypoints), with you to use on the day, (max size A5). There will be an opportunity to create a quick drypoint image if you haven’t brought your own plates, but due to available time the focus of the intensive workshop will be hands-on learning of chine-collé techniques, not on plate making. Students will learn about different varieties of suitable Japanese papers; techniques for how to make and apply wheat starch paste; how to register and apply the chine collé at the time of printing; how to dry and handle chine collé prints; and other innovative techniques for how chine-collé can be incorporated with other printing techniques.

This course runs alongside Danielle’s solo exhibition in the WYPW gallery space during April/May 2018.
