Join artist and printmaker Saba Rifat to explore traditional geometric pattern through screen printing. You will be shown how to create simple geometric patterns, how to transfer these onto a screen, and experiment with printing your pattern in different combinations and colours to generate new compositions.

Plato said ‘Geometry is study of the eternally existent’ and is the basis of shape and form. Traditional Geometric Patterns are rooted in distinct symmetry with an underlying universal grid system. Islamic Patterns are usually based on a repeat unit that is systematically arranged and repeated to create elaborate compositions with sophisticated, intricate, mesmerizing, abstract, repetitive, infinitive and kaleidoscopic effects. Patterns can be created by manipulating use of polygon as ‘repeat units’ or by ‘tessellating’ such equilateral triangles squares, and hexagons. Geometric patterns allow a multitude of possibilities for individual artists to self-express through the clever use of abstraction, form, colour, and tones to produce original ideas.

If you have a hectic life and have to squeeze your creative time into a tightly-packed schedule, our CREATE! Saturday Sessions are for you! They are hands-on, inky, creative and experimental. You can learn a new skill and indulge your creativity, and get home in time for tea! Some preparation will have been done before you start on these sessions, and therefore you may still need further training before using the workshops as a member, depending on the technique taught.
